The reaction of 2,2′-dipyridil with iodine (I 2 ; molar ratio 1:3) in CH 2 Cl 2  solution yields the polymeric complex 2,2′-dipyridil(I 2 ) 3 . The crystal structure of the compound was determined from single crystal X-ray data (monoclinic, C2/c, a = 3215.0(16), b = 439.9(1), c = 1824.1(9) pm, β = 130.79(3)°, Z = 4).
