The synthesis of a λ 3  P-substituted phosphorane involving direct substitution of a Ph 2 P group at λ 5 P by the reaction of a chlorophosphorane with Ph 2 PSiMe 3  is described; the identity of this novel compound is established by NMR and mass spectroscopy, and by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study.
