The 2-amino malondialdehyde bis[dimethylacetal] 2 and some of its N-monosubstituted derivatives 7 a-d as well as the o-carboxy benzoyl malondialdehyde 12 have been prepared. With heterocyclic imonium salts these amino malondialdehyde derivatives form, by a twofold condensation reaction, the y-acylamino-substituted pentamethine cyanine dyes 15 a-c, 17, and 18a-b, the UV/Vis and 13C NMR spectra of which are recorded with respect to the influence of the y-substituent on these spectra
