The title compound was prepared by heating the hydrolysis products of AS2O4 in a sealed tube. The crystal structure was determined and refined to R = 0.058 [P2 1 /c, a = 1250.4(6), b = 459.3(2), c = 1097.6(6) pm, β = 118.08(5)°, Z = 4]. The structure consists of infinite layers, containing pyramidal As(III)O 3  and tetrahedral As(V)O 4  groups, and stabilised by hydrogen bonding
