The crystal structure of the complex compound of SbCl 3  with a chelating bipyridyl group was determined. Sb(C 10 H 8 N 2 )Cl 3  crystallizes in the space group P2 1 /c with a = 818.9(4), b = 695.8(7), c = 2331.3(12) pm, β = 103.59(4)° and Z = 4 molecules per unit cell. The SbCl 3  fragment is T-shaped with &lt;Sb-Cl&gt; at 254.7 pm. Taking into account also the N atoms of the chelating 2,2′-bipyridyl group (&lt;Sb-N&gt; = 228.1 pm) and an intermolecular Sb···Cl contact at 334.0 pm the Sb coordination is distorted octahedral.
