Extended photolysis of M(CO) 6  (M = W, Mo) and methyl acrylate or dimethyl fumarate results in formation of (η 2  -olefin) 2 M(CO) 4  via the less stable (η 2  -olefin)M(CO) 5  complexes. X-ray structure analysis of (η 2 -methyl acrylate) 2 W(CO) 4  reveals the trans-staggered arrangement of the olefinic ligands. Rotational barriers are determined by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy.
