The two isotypic compounds LiY 2 Si 2  and LiNd 2 Si 2  were prepared and chemically characterized. The crystal structure determination of LiY 2 Si 2  by means of X-ray methods revealed a modified U 3 Si 2 -structure. The lattice constants of the tetragonal cells are:
