The metallated diphosphinomethanes Li[R 2 PCHPR2′] (R,R′ = CH 3 , C 6 H 5 ) react with R2 ″PCl (R ″ = CH 3 , C 6 H 5 ) to give trisphosphinomethanes, [(R 2 P)(R 2 ′P)(R 2 ″P)]CH. The reaction is shown to proceed via electrophilic attack at the phosphorus of Li[R 2 PCHPR 2 ′]by formation of the phosphorus ylids R 2  ″P-PR 2 =CH-PR 2 ′under certain conditions, mainly controlled by steric effects.These ylids slowly rearrange to the trisphosphino- methanes in solution,but with R ″= t C 4 H 9 ,the ylids are stable.
