The reaction of 2-(2′-pyridyl)-indan-1,3-dione (pyrophthalone, 1) with reactive malonic acid derivatives (2) yields the indanoquinolizinone derivative (5) by rearrangement of the instable zwitter-ionic compound 3 and decarboxylation of the seven-membered intermediate 4. In order to support this mechanism the lactone 15 was thermolyzed to give fluorenone (16) by decarboxylation.
