Hydride abstraction from the hydrides (π-C 5 H 5 )(OC) 3 MH (M = Mo, W) using Ph 3 C + X _  (X = BF 4 , PF 6 ) affords the compounds (π-C 5 H 5 )(OC) 3 MX in high yields. IR data indicate that in these complexes tetrafluoroborate and hexafluorophosphate are coordinated to the metal. The complexes behave as strong Lewis acids; they react with σ- and π-donors L to give [(π-C 5 H 5 )(OC) 3 ML]+X- [L = CO, PPh 3 , PCl 3 , C 2 H 4 , CH 3 CN, H 2 O, (CH 3 ) 2 CO, C 4 H 8 O(THF)]. The hexafluorophosphate compounds add methylene chloride to give [(π-C 5 H 5 )(OC) 3 M(CH 2 Cl 2 )] + PF 6  - . Reaction with diphenylacetylene yields [(π-C 5 H 5 )(OC)M(PhC ≡CPh) 2 ] + BF 4 - (M = Mo, W). The hydride-bridged complexes {[(π-C 5 H 5 )M(CO) 3 ] 2 H}+X- have been obtained by reaction of (π-C 5 H 5 )(OC) 3 MX with (π-C 5 H 5 )(OC) 3 MH.
