Carbon subsulphide (C 3 S 2 ), prepared by pyrolytic reduction of CS 2 , reacts with 6-chloro-4-hydroxycoumarin and thiobenzamide to yield the polythiopyrones and thiazinethiones 5, 6 and 7. 2-Mercaptopyridine and C 3 S 2  give the mesoionic compound 8. Generally it can be shown that C 3 S 2  reacts to give higher condensed products.
