A homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation system can be prepared by reaction of NiCl 2  · 6 H 2 O or CoCl · 6 H 2 O with NaBH 4  in dimethylformamide or dimethylacetamide. This system is a quite efficient catalyst for hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds under mild conditions but it is very sensitive to traces of air. Reaction rates r up to 15 (mmol ­· 1 -1  · min -1 ) were observed. 1,3-Cyclohexadiene is very selectively hydrogenated to cyclohexene in dimethylacetamide.
