New modifications of the rare-earth sesquisulfides Ln 2 S 3  (Ln = Lu-Ho, Y) were found after high pressure, high temperature treatment and quenching to ambient conditions. The crystal structure of the prototype Tm 2 S 3 -III was determined from singlecrystal data. Tm 2 S 3 -III and the other members of the isotypic series Ln 2 S 3 -III are isostructural with U 2 S 3 . Some relations between the U 2 S 3  structure and other structures with trigonal prismatic anion configurations are discussed.
