Addition of EDTA * to ribosomal preparations followed by gelfiltration on agarose-columns, causes separation of ribosomal proteins accounting for the pink colour of ribosomes. This chromoprotein contains 20% iron. It recombines with the colourless subribosomal nucleoproteid-particle from which it had been released, during incubation in a ribosome-stable buffer lacking EDTA.
