L. leichmannii 313 wandelt im Nährmedium angebotenes Xanthin oder Hypoxanthin in Guanin und Adenin um (Isolierung von Guanin und Adenin aus den Nucleinsäuren). Auf Grund der veränderten Umwandlungsraten nach Zusatz von nicht-radioaktivem Guanin und der früher  1  festgestellten Umwandlung von Guanin in Adenin, die nicht reversibel ist, wird ein Umwandlungsschema aufgestellt.
