In order to explain the unusual absorption characteristics of derivatives of benzopyrrole and benzodipyrrole, PPP-calculations were carried out. By means of configuration analysis the results of these calculations were interpreted in terms of molecular subunits. On the basis of this method the long wavelength absorption of this class of compounds can mainly be ascribed to the large contribution of charge transfer configurations as well as to excitonic interactions. The effect of twisting the N-phenyl bond is discussed
