The photoelectron spectra (AlKα, Hell , Hei) of Gd, Tb, Gd 2 Cl 3  and Tb 2 Cl 3  are measured and discussed. They clearly indicate 4f 7 - and 4f 8 -configuration for the sesquihalides of Gd and Tb, respectively. In the case of Gd 2 Cl 3  a band gap of approximately 1 eV is estimated.
