A periodic reaction was observed for the total oxidation of methanol to CO 2  and H 2 O on a Pd-supported catalyst. By measuring the temperature oscillations of the catalyst and the corresponding product distribution the phenomenology could be correlated with a chemical reaction scheme. The reaction scheme is based on the nonmonotonic behavior of the pressure-concentration relationship of the Pd-H system
