Raman spectra of some solid and molten AuCl 3 -PCl 5  mixtures have been recorded. In the system investigated only the compound AuCl 3  · PCl 5  is found. This adduct is built up by ionic PCl 4  +  and AuCl 4 - units and it should be formulated as PCl 4 AuCl 4 . These complex ions are present in the melt too. The thermal stability of AuCl 4 - is noteworthy, and it is explained by pressure influenced equilibria. Only PCl 4 AuCl 4 , besides excess PCl 5  or AUCl 3 , is present in the mixtures.
