The fluorescence spectra of the title compounds have been measured in the pH 9 to H 0  -9 acidity range at 25 °C. Chromone and its 2-methyl derivative fluoresce intensely from their protonated form, whereas the uncharged molecules are nonfluorescent. Förster cycle calculations show chromone to be more basic in its first excited singlet state than in its ground state, but protonation proceeds incompletely during the lifetime of the excited molecule.
