The observed blue shift of the carbazole chromophore by N-acylation has been verified by CNDO-CI-calculations of fluorene, carbazole and N-formyl-carbazole. From the CNDO-CI results which are in excellent agreement with the experimental data, a detailed analysis of the spectra is derived.
