Beside the well-known ESR-spectrum of Fe 3+  -ions in α-Al 2 O 3  we observed two further lines of very low intensity which are to be characterized as forbidden transitions with selection rules Δm s =2 and 4. Computations for the transitions with Δm s  = 4 are in good agreement with experiment. The transition with Δm s =2 shows small but unambiguous deviations for the position of the resonance field and large deviations for the relative intensity. This effect is not compatible with the concept of a crystal field of trigonal symmetry up to the fourth order.
