Below 5000 Å the silent electric discharge in ammonia essentially reveals the same emission spectrum as the glow discharge. Between 5000 and 8000 Å in discharges in NH 3  as well as in N 2 H 4  there appear besides the Schuster band and the Ha line especially 3 new diffuse peaks with maxima of intensity at about 5253, 6380 and 7560 Å. These emissions are caused presumably by a more than 2atomic molecule (NH 3 , N 2 H 2 , N 2 H 3  or N 2 H 4 ). The behaviour of the intensities of the H α  line and the Schuster band favours the hypothesis H + N 2 H 3  → N 2 H 4 * → N 2 H 4  + h v for the formation of the Schuster band already put forward some time ago.
