The mean squared electric field〈E 2 〉 associated with the great number of vibrational waves excited in an acoustoelectric domain is determined by means of an asymptotic analysis of the current saturation parameter. It is found that the Franz-Keldysh effect caused by 〈E 2 〉 can account for the optical transmission modulation observed during the passage of an acoustoelectric domain.
