An electric spark of high energy density is produced by discharging a capacitor through closely spaced electrodes immersed in a liquid dielectric. A hot plasma arises which is surrounded by a compression ring of highly compressed matter. The shape and state of motion of the compression ring are photographed by the aid of X-ray flashes. Out of the magnitude of the compression, and since the broadening velocity of the compression ring goes nearly to zero, it is concluded that the original liquid in the compression ring undergoes, for a time, a solidification by shock wave pro-cesses. These investigations were carried out in organic liquids and water.
