NMR emission and enhanced absorption of products of radical reactions (CIDNP) is explained by nuclear spin dependent adiabatic transitions between singlet and triplet states of transient radical pairs. In magnetic fields larger than about 1 kG only S - T o -transitions contribute to nuclear polarization. From a kinetic formulation of the pair mechanism equations for quantitative calculations of CIDNP patterns are derived.
