Electron attachment to 2-methoxy-2-hydroperoxy propane often leads to a breakage of the 0 - 0 bond. The resulting ion CH 3 OC (CH 3 )  2 O -  carries excess energy and frequently dissociates either into CH 2 C(CH 3 )O -  and methanol or HC(CH 3 ) 2 O -  and formaldehyde. In addition, a methyl group may be split from the methoxy group. The resulting ion -OC(CH 3 ) 2 O 2 H has a high electron affinity (probably more than 3 eV). Other processes occurring frequently are the loss of H 2  to produce C 4 H 8 O 3  -  and the formation of O 2  - . Many other ions with low abundances have also been observed.
