Although there exist competing theories on deviant behavior in the various “paradigms” of sociology, systematic comparisons of these theories are rare. This paper firstly selects some marxist hypotheses on deviant behavior according to which material diadvantages and the nonexistence of legitimate oppotunities have a direct effect on deviance. Secondly a hypothesis from behavioral sociology is selected. It is shown that according to this hypothesis the marxist hypotheses are valid only if certain conditions are fulfilled, which follow from the behavioral hypothesis. Thirdly the paper discusses some possibilities how further research on the comparison of theories of deviance could proceed.
