The expressions used for referring to the credit programs established during the European crisis have been highly criticized in the public discourse in Germany. However, the claim that these referring expressions are mainly metaphorical (Rettungsschirm, -topf and -paket) and have a manipulative effect on people’s perception of the designated credit programs lacks empirical evidence. In this article I analyze nearly 100 German, French and Spanish newspaper articles in order to check this hypothesis based on empirical data within a linguistic framework, and to compare the referring expressions used in Germany with those used in France and Spain.The results show that the referring expressions are most often used literally. But more than half of the referring expressions used to designate one particular credit program in the German corpus are metaphorical in nature and may give rise to conceptual metaphors like THE CREDIT PROGRAM IS A PARACHUTE / AN UMBRELLA / A POT. The source domains only highlight the positive aspects of the target domain, hiding the negative ones – the fact that the countries receiving loans have to accept strict demands for budget cuts and that the other European countries act as guarantors for the loans that have been granted.
