The article makes the proposal that at the beginning of Babylonian rule in Judah a part of its population, of the »remnant«, began to organise itself in place of the failed monarchy as an ethnic or ethno-religious community. It was endowed with some autonomy within the frame of the Neo-Babylonian state and headed by an officially appointed leader – Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam – who acted also as the representative of the community before the ruling power. He enjoyed the support of different groups of the »remnant«, but also met with strong opposition within the community and outside it.
