While many scholars have discussed the Babylonian context of Ezekiel’s prophecies and the presence therein of Akkadian loan words, additional examples from the Neo-Babylonian environment of Ezekiel can undoubtedly be adduced to shed further light on the book. This article examines the difficult sentence ויד ברא בראש דרך עיר ברא in Ez 21,24b. While most modern commentators follow the Septuagint version or interpret the word ברא as ›remove, clear a place‹, this paper suggests that it reflects the Akkadian verb  bāru . This meaning was still known in late antiquity, as demonstrated by the Vulgate and standard change from ברים to בדים , but was forgotten over time.
