Exegesis of the Psalter is not intended to replace the careful interpretation of the individual psalms, but to complement this through observations on the composition of the psalms. This paper seeks to examine critically, how much »Zion« is contained in Psalms 120–134. It examines to what extent we can speak of the Zion theology linking the psalms in the final form of these texts, or if the Zion theology represents a conceptual idea, which so strongly influences the reading of the individual texts that the phenomenon of labelling is present. The result is: In the centre of the Songs of Ascents is not the temple as an edifice nor as a cultic place, but rather the effects of blessing for the social community.
