It is being proposed in this study that the word חיים , in the phrase חיים וחסד , belongs to the preceding verse, where תְּשׂכְכֵנִי should be emended to תַּשְׁכֵּנְנִי , »make dwell in me«. Moreover, v. 12a should be understood negatively, as a rhetorical question that casts doubt on the benefit of being born. These emendations resolve the difficulties with the phrase חיים וחסד , and result in cogent texts for both vv. 11 and 12.
