The  tris legomenon  אמילם appears as part of the repeated formula בשם יהוה כי אמילם in Ps 118,10–12. Ancient versions attest a number of differing translations of the term, prompting numerous textual emendations of MT. No consensus has emerged regarding the meaning of the term or any textual emendation. This essay revisits F. Delitzsch’s proposal for translating אמילם as »I cut them to pieces« in light of the iconography of disarticulation in the ancient Near East, a source of data that has not yet been considered in the discussion. The analysis shows how the psalmist’s foes are pictured as an integrated and indistinguishable whole ( כל גוים , v. 10), but then are literally dis-integrated through the power of the divine name. Methodologically, the analysis demonstrates how ancient Near Eastern iconography has the potential not only to elucidate psalmic imagery, but also to help solve complex lexicographical problems and text-critical issues that arise from conflicting ancient translations.
