In this communication it is proposed as a hypothesis that the חטאת of the unusual wording לפתח חטאת רבץ in the MT of Gen 4,7 conceals the equivalent of the demon ḫa’aṭu, »the lurker« of the Assyrian exorcism prayers. It would have been modified (by metathesis, but preserving an audible connection with the presumed original word) into a very acceptable ,חטאת »sin«, by a circle of scribes who either were unaware of or wished to remove this relic of ancient demonology.
