This study deals with the general image/s of the prophets of old – to be distinguished from that of particular prophets, e.g., Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah – that the Book of Kings evoked among its intended and primary readership in the postmonarchic period. It concludes that the prophets of old as a group were imagined as (a) a faithful minority of servants of YHWH who are likely to become an object of persecution, if the ruling leader is sinful, (b) a group aware of Israel’s past history of misconduct that justified the extreme divine punishment against monarchic Israel, and that unsuccessfully tried to bring Israel to YHWH; (c) a group that embodies a reminder of Israel’s history of rejecting YHWH and disregarding the advise of YHWH’s servants; and (d) a group associated with transmission of YHWH’s teachings and which stood at the earliest spot in the chain of transmission of these teachings that leads directly to the readers and rereaders of the Book of Kings. This contribution also discusses how this construction of the prophets relates to the general images of the prophets of old that were communicated by other biblical works and to the social world of the literati of the postmonarchic period.
