In this paper I shall argue that the revelation enacted on the Euripidean stage is not that of potential salvation but that of the final disaster that is death; and the initiation re-enacted onstage is the initiation of few carefully selected heroes, who are about to experience death. Euripides employs Orphic rites and beliefs as aspects of a specific material not only to be assembled and thereupon contrasted with each other – such as epic immortality – but also, through that very process of contrasting, to be reinvented.
