We compared within-population variability and degree\udof population differentiation for neutral genetic markers\ud(RAPDS) and eight quantitative traits in Central American\udpopulations of the endangered tree, Cedrela odorata.\udWhilst population genetic diversity for neutral markers\ud(Shannon index) and quantitative traits (heritability,\udcoefficient of additive genetic variation) were uncorrelated,\udboth marker types revealed strong differentiation\udbetween populations from the Atlantic coast of Costa\udRica and the rest of the species’ distribution. The degree\udof interpopulation differentiation was higher for RAPD\udmarkers (FST = 0.67 for the sampled Mesoamerican\udrange) than for quantitative traits (QST = 0.30). Hence,\udthe divergence in quantitative traits was lower than\udcould have been achieved by genetic drift alone, suggesting\udthat balancing selection for similar phenotypes in\uddifferent populations of this species. Nevertheless, a\udcomparison of pair-wise estimates of population differentiation in neutral genetic markers and quantitative\udtraits revealed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.66)\udsuggesting that, for C. odorata, neutral marker divergence\udcould be used as a surrogate for adaptive gene\uddivergence for conservation planning. The utility of this\udfinding and suggested further work are discussed
