Social inequalities in health have persisted or increased in the era of non-communicable diseases. They are sensitive to changes in underlying structural mechanisms which are ‘socialy produced’. Research in this field is increasingly concerned with changes over time in the magnitude of health inequalities between social groups and related structural mechanisms contributing to this change. Equity-oriented monitoring systems are essential for this task, but not yet well established in Germany.
