Background:  The energy status of the cell is regulated by the energy sensing network constituted by AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the NAD + -dependent type III deacetylase silence information regulator T1 (SIRT1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α).
