The photocatalytic degradation of a variety of carbohydrates in solution, including mono-, di-, and poly-saccharides, has been investigated under unaerated conditions with the use of a Pt/TiO2 catalyst and a solar light simulating source. It has been found that, even in the absence of oxygen, complete oxidation of carbohydrates toward CO 2  can be achieved, which is accompanied by evolution of hydrogen in the gas phase. The overall reaction may be described as aqueous reforming of saccharides and may proceed at ambient conditions. Results are explained by considering that carbohydrates act as sacrificial electron donors by consuming photogenerated holes (and other oxidants) thereby suppressing the rates of electron-hole recombination and oxygen-hydrogen back reaction, which are mainly responsible for the relatively low hydrogen production rates observed in the photocatalytic cleavage of pure water. The rate of hydrogen production increases by almost two orders of magnitude with increase of saccharide concentration in the range 0-0.5 M, and to a lesser extent with increase of solution pH or temperature. It is concluded that the photoreforming process may provide a sustainable route for the production of renewable hydrogen with simultaneous mineralization of waste products of biomass processing industries.

Anaerobic Photocatalytic Oxidation of Carbohydrates in Aqueous Pt/TiO 2 Suspensions with Simultaneous Production of Hydrogen
