A novel visible-light-activated La 2 O 3 /SnO 2  photocatalyst was prepared by co-precipitation method, and characterized by thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2  adsorption-desorption measurement and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The characterization results found that the phase composition, crystallite size, BET surface area and optical absorption of the sample varied significantly with the calcining temperature. The photocatalytic activities of La 2 O 3 /SnO 2  photocatalysts were assessed by the degradation of reactive blue 19 in aqueous solution under visible light (λ&gt;400nm) irradiation. Experiments indicated that the La 2 O 3 /SnO 2  photocatalyst calcined at 400 °C for 2h (the molar ratio of La to Sn is 1:3) exhibited maximum photocatalytic activity due to the sample with a smaller particle size and a higher surface area. The degradation rate of reactive blue 19 reached 99.0% in 80 min, which is about 2.5 times higher than that of the standard P25 photocatalyst.
