In this paper, results of phenol degradation in water induced by a DC corona discharge run in air-like gas mixture above the water surface are presented. The DC positive corona discharge was generated between a stressed hollow needle and the water surface. Air with 1.5% CO 2  flowed through the hollow needle. The distance between the hollow needle electrode and the water surface was 2 cm. A grounded stainless steel mesh electrode was mounted 1 cm below the water surface. Chemical compositions of the outlet gas was analyzed using a FTIR spectrophotometer. Concentration of phenol and its oxidation products in the water was measured by a gas chromatograph. Concentration of ozone and hydrogen peroxide in the water was measured using an optical spectrometer. It was found that ozone, produced by the corona discharge in the gas phase above the water surface, dissolves in the water and oxidizes phenol into dihydroxyphenols. Another phenol oxidant, hydrogen peroxide, is produced by the corona discharge in the aqueous phase. Increasing the corona discharge duration results in increased phenol degradation rate. Also the water conductivity and acidity increase as a result of phenol degradation into organic acids. The oxidants generated by the DC positive corona discharge oxidize 91% of phenol in 90 min. The energy efficiency of the phenol oxidation is about 3.5 x 10 -10  mol/J (118 mg/kWh) and is comparable to the results obtained in the pulsed corona discharge systems.
