A packed-bed silent discharge plasma (PBSDP) reactor was constructed by filling dielectric materials in a cylinder silent discharge plasma reactor with the gap of 18.5 mm. The dielectric materials assessed included Al 2 O 3  and glass beads with various sizes. The simulated gas streams contained 1000 ppmv acetal­dehyde, select O 2  content and balanced N 2 . Experimental results show that packed materials in silent discharge reactors can enhance acetaldehyde removal, whereas Al 2 O 3  is better than glass beads. For the gas streams containing 1000 ppmv acetaldehyde, 5% oxygen, and balanced nitrogen, 99% removal efficiency is achieved, whereas the energy yield is 13 g/kWh. The maximum energy yield of 29 g/kWh is achieved for the gas stream containing 3% O 2 . Product analysis indicates that more than 90% carbons from acetaldehyde are converted to CO 2  and CO. Acetaldehyde removal efficiency increases with increasing applied voltage, however, high concentrations of NO 2  and N 2 O are generated simultaneously.
