This paper presents the characteristics of two different titania-hematite composite systems, namely titania-colloidal hematite particles and titania-nano hematite particles, and their use as photocatalysts. The transmission electron micrographs showed that the colloidal hematite particles were capped with layers of TiO 2  as a core-shell system while nano hematite particles were embedded within the titania particles. The presence of hematite particles in both systems enhanced the phase transformation of anatase to rutile. The UV-vis absorption of the coated particles lied between that of pure TiO 2  and pure hematite with the onset of absorption shifting towards the visible region as the iron content increased. Study of the photocatalytic activity of the two composite systems showed that under near-UV illumination the coated samples with a lower Fe content exhibited better photoactivities. Partial dissolution of hematite was observed for both titania-colloidal hematite and titania-nano hematite systems, except for the titania-nano hematite system with 0.08 atom % of Fe. This could be due to the low level of Fe in solution limiting its detection.
