The effects of pre-treatment of TiO 2  photocatalyst on gas-phase degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) and ethyl alcohol (EtOH) were studied, by using a batch reactor. Pre-illumination of the photocatalyst with black-light fluorescent lamps accelerated the photocatalytic degradation of both TCE and EtOH. When the photocatalytic degradation of TCE was repeated immediately after the degradation of TCE (the first reaction), the degradation in the second reaction proceeded faster than in the first reaction. The effects were presumed to be due to the intermediates which would help the production of the chlorine radicals. Such effects weren’t observed in the photocatalytic degradation of EtOH.
