A variety of trace contaminants can accumulate in closed atmospheres, both in space and on earth, where they may pose a health threat to the human occupants. Complete photodegradation of organic pollutants with oxygen can be carried out on TiO 2 . Lynntech has developed and tested a novel photoreactor based on using a thin layer of TiO 2  coated onto a network of fused-silica fibers. The main advantage of this design is that the small diameter optical fibers coated with TiO 2  provide an extremely high ratio of photoactive TiO 2  surface to total reactor volume. The fibers serve as a support for TiO 2  and as “light guides” which enable the light to be transmitted through the TiO 2  coating directly to the reaction zone between the polluted air and the surface of the photocatalytic coating. The photoreactor was successfully tested for the destruction of ethylene and methane, and degradation efficiencies as high as 98% were achieved.
