Dye wastewaters generally contain highly colored refractory organic chemicals. Traditional biological processes have proven inefficient in the removal of commercial dyes; however, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as Fenton’s Reagent TiO 2/ UV, UV/H 2 0 2 , and ionizing radiation have been shown to be effective. To investigate the potential of using Fe(II) to enhance the effects of ionizing radiation on dye wastewater decolor- ization due to reaction with the hydrogen peroxide produced by the irradiation of the water matrix (Fenton’s Reaction), two dye wastewater simulants containing C.I. Reactive Red 120 and C.I. Direct Blue 160, respectively, were treated at a bench scale utilizing a  60 Co source and at large scale using the Miami Electron Beam Research Facility (EBRF). The results demonstrated that several color removal processes were involved in the experiments. Increased radiation dose was always associated with increased color removal and at certain concentrations, Fe(II) did improve the overall color removal efficiency in the bench scale tests. In several experiments the addition of iron alone led to significant dye decolorization. In the large scale electron beam experiments, a decrease in removal efficiency with Fe(II) addition was observed in some cases. Fenton’s reaction was considered not to be important in the decolorization process of Direct Blue 160 and Reactive Red 120 by ionizing radiation. Irradiation and the formation of iron-dye complexes with subsequent precipitation appear to be the primary color removal processes.
