Four principal types of organic developing agents are typically used in photographic science: (a) HO- (CH=CH) n -OH, (b) HO-(CH=CH) n -NH 2 , (c) H 2 N-(CH=CH) n -NH 2  and (d) heterocyclics, for either black-and-white or color film development. Once the developing chemistries of these agents have been achieved, they and their oxidized product(s) in the bath together with the wash solutions in the fixer stage that contain silver and silver complexes need to be disposed of. A heterogeneous photocatalytic technology is described that can be employed to discharge such tasks. The technology is based on illuminating a suitable semiconductor photocatalyst (plentiful and non-toxic) that completely destroys the organics and permits the recovery of silver and other metals that have been used in the photographic formulations.
