The generation efficiency of the hydroxyl radical adduct (DMPO-OH) from the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1- pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) has been determined, both in a homogeneous system (H 2 O 2 ) and in a heterogeneous system (TiO 2 ), using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) for the determination of the formation rate of the DMPO-OH spin adduct and HPLC for the determination of the generation rate of the OH radicals. The experimental results show that the detection of the formaldehyde derivative formed in the reaction of methanol with photoproduced •OH radicals is a good measure of the •OH radical production rate and that a limiting generation efficiency is reached. The DMPO-OH generation efficiency is found to be (33±3)% in the homogeneous system and (28±3)% in the heterogeneous system. The sources of the experimental errors were estimated.
